Care at Home Services

Disabled people who use Leonard Cheshire services in their own homes know they can rely on a service that is reliable, flexible and professional. More than 5,000 disabled people currently use our Care at Home Service, which enables them to continue to run their own lives, with Leonard Cheshire staff working with them to facilitate certain tasks. Across the country, the service annually provides one and a half million hours of care and support - which may include personal tasks such as assisting someone to get up, to wash or to eat. Our staff may, on the other hand, assist people with their shopping, or accompany them in their leisure time, or in many cases give the necessary support that enables the service user to go to work. The Care at Home Service puts disabled people in control, enabling them to live the lives they want to lead. The individual disabled people we work with make the decisions, Leonard Cheshire provides the services.

'I always knew I was the same as anybody else, but it was my local Leonard Cheshire service that really gave me the confidence and support to get my life back on track.'

Independent Living

Independent living means just that - having your own place, doing your own thing, whenever you want to. Thousands of disabled people across the world are enjoying that freedom for the first time in their lives - thanks to Leonard Cheshire. Our independent living services vary according to the needs of individuals and their surroundings. In Canada, provision and support such as accessible public transport and integrated education make it easier for disabled people to take their place in the community. In Africa, independence often revolves around the cultural status of having a job, which increases a person's chance of getting married. How a disabled person defines independence differs throughout the world, but in the end it comes down to one common thread - having choice, and being in control.

Day Services

Day services used to be seen as a diversion to help fill a disabled person's day. Today, Leonard Cheshire day services provide a much broader resource for disabled people.  The people who use our day services do so for all sorts of reasons - for discussion groups, sport, leisure and community activities and there are always opportunities for service users to further their skills development. Some people attend computer classes with a view to gaining a qualification, or learn a skill which improves their chances of getting a job.

Residential and Nursing Services

Leonard Cheshire residential and nursing services provide a caring environment where support is tailored to meet disabled people's individual needs. Many of our residents' disabilities are so severe that they require round the clock, specific nursing care. The alternative is often life in hospital. Our residential and nursing services provide accommodation where every service user feels at home. Our staff and volunteers make every effort to ensure that each resident is in control in their own life - no matter how severe their disability. We do everything possible to provide residents with everyday choices. Whether it is the choice of when to get up or go to bed, when to enjoy a meal or simply to go to the bathroom in privacy - these everyday rights are fundamental to our work.
