I have been disabled since I contracted meningitis at just 9 months old. I am now 68 and really don't know where I would be without Leonard Cheshire. I lived with my parents until I was 46, when they could no longer look after me. I moved into a long stay hospital for 13 years, but then had to move because I was approaching my 60th birthday and the rules said I was too old to be there. I have lived at St Cecilia's Cheshire Home for the last 8 years, and it has always felt like my home. It's very different to living in hospital. it has a calm, quiet atmosphere and we're like a family here. Although my condition means I can't do a lot for myself, I enjoy watching television and making use of the computer room. But that doesn't mean that I don't go out. I really enjoy swimming, and every now and again we go to the theatre, and there is always something happening here in the Home. But some of the best things about life at St Cecilia's are the staff and the volunteers - everyone is so friendly and I am so well looked after. It is a wonderful, comfortable place to call my home. |
