Service Users -  Hugh - Independent Living

I moved to one of Leonard Cheshire's independent living units in Edinburgh three years  ago, and it's the best move I've ever made. Having always lived in hospitals or residential care. I was anxious at first. I'd always been used to having company all day, every day and I worried how I would cope in my own place, where I had control over how to spend my days, and who to see.

It's the little things that other people take for granted and, thinking about it, everyone should take for granted. I don't have to get up or go to bed at a certain time, I can play my music as loud as I want to!

The difference is that for the first time in my life, I've got a home of my own. Four of us live here, but we have individual flats in the middle of Edinburgh city centre. Of course I still need care staff but they are more like mates than carers.

There should be more places like this, more options for disabled people like myself. My move here has reawakened everything and given me a new found sense of freedom. I couldn't be happier
