| Being in control of our
lives and being able to influence other people - as a disabled person
myself, those are the two most important things to me.
If you are in control, you choose the type of support you have, you choose the time you get up, the time you go to bed, and how you live your life. A lot of people think independence - being in control - is about doing things on your own. But it needn't be. Why spend hours struggling to get out of bed just to say you did it yourself? Being in control for me means choosing to have someone assist me to get up in 30 minutes so I can spend the next two hours getting on with my life. The Disabled People's Forum runs courses which help disabled people to think about their own lives. The Forum's disabled staff and freelance trainers enable other disabled people to identify the things they want to influence, then give them the support they need to do this effectively. This covers many things within a Leonard Cheshire service, such as staff training, recruitment and quality initiatives - which in turn helps make services more flexible and benefits other service users. Leonard Cheshire is an organisation which is committed to enabling disabled people to make the decisions about how they live their lives. It is because of this philosophy that The Disabled People's Forum can provide an environment for disabled people to support each other in taking control of their lives and play a full part in society. |
